Christopher Morrell, Mathematical Sciences, received the 1999 Herbert Sichel Award from the South African Statistical Association (SASA). This award was presented to J.S. Maritz, C.J. Lombard and C.H. Morrell for their paper "Exact Group Comparisons Using Irregular Longitudinal Data" which was published in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C - Applied Statistics in 1998. The award is ordinarily given to a member of the SASA with the best publication in a particular year. The first two authors of the paper are members of the SASA and received the award in 1999. Later the SASA decided to include Morrell (a non SASA member) as part of the award. Morrell collaborated with Maritz and Lombard while he was on sabbatical in South Africa in 1996, working with them at the Biostatistics Unit of the Medical Research Council.
